    Support & Safety During Crisis

Treating Undocumented Families Facing ICE & Detention

    Presented by

    Dr. Sandra Espinoza, PsyD, LMFT

    Friday, February 6th, 2026

    9:00 am - 11:15 am PT

    Zoom, 2 CEs

    On Zoom

    Course Description

This introductory workshop will prepare clinicians with the knowledge and tools to support undocumented clients and families impacted by the threat of deportation. Recent research highlights the urgent need for such clinical awareness. Personally knowing a detained or deported person, particularly when the individual is a family member, is strongly associated with poorer mental health among U.S. citizens (Pinedo & Valdez, 2020). This webinar will provide clinicians with specific skills to assess and address the relational ruptures, attachment disruptions, and trauma responses that often accompany deportation-related family separation. Participants will learn how to integrate trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive, and systemic approaches in their work. Practical interventions, case examples, and strategies for navigating clinical and community-based challenges will be included.

    Educational Goals

Participants will be able to recognize and address the complex relational and psychological impact of deportation and deportation threat on the mental health of the undocumented community through culturally grounded and trauma-informed clinical work.

    Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

    1. Describe the impact of deportation and deportation related threat on the mental health of undocumented individuals and families.
    2. Apply at least two strategies to conduct a culturally grounded and sensitive assessment to better understand the needs of undocumented individuals and families.
    3. Apply at least two culturally sensitive and trauma informed approaches/interventions to clients affected by deportation and deportation related threat.

The RECAMFT CARE (Compassion, Acknowledgement, Recharge and Empower) Circle was created as a safe space for us as a community of therapists who are also human.

It is a place to come to share challenges and successes, seek support, offer compassion, share wisdom and express gratitude and be uplifted.  We hold much for our clients and in our own lives; this is a brief time to set down our load for a moment and bring in light and lightness.

The group is informal, small and relaxed.  We share work and/or personal struggles and triumphs, express gratitude, witness each other and give support; and advice if asked for.  We also share uplifting readings, quotes or any other medium that inspires or comforts. And we often laugh!

Pat Hromalik, 2026 RECAMFT President and CARE Circle Coordinator

Note: We are looking for CARE Circle facilitators so we can continue to offer monthly meetings. For 2026, until we find someone to help, Pat can only facilitate four meetings while she is in the RECAMFT President role.  Those meetings are scheduled for 90 minutes but will be shortened to 60 minutes if we have 4 or fewer participants.

Currently, our 2026 CARE Circle meetings are planned for:

We hope new facilitators will want to offer the group at different days/times to allow for more access for members. Please reach out to Pat at president@recamft.org or email RECAMFT at info@recamft.org if you are interested in facilitating.

          Course Description

Artificial Intelligence is shifting the relational bedrock of society; are we ready for it as mental health professionals? AI is already in your practice, whether invited or not. Hundreds of millions of people are using AI chatbots for emotional support, which means that most clinicians have clients who are turning to chatbots in between sessions. How do we conceptualize this in the therapeutic context? How do we assess for this? What are the potential implications of AI-attachment? AI is being seamlessly interwoven into clinical tools such as EHRs for documentation, scheduling, and note summarization. Utilizing these tools requires thoughtful engagement in order to uphold the highest ethical standards of privacy, informed consent, confidentiality, and most of all the therapeutic alliance itself. Before diving into these tools additional considerations include addressing algorithmic bias and our ethical responsibility to advocate for marginalized communities. All of this and more will be explored in this insightful, nuanced, and balanced presentation of AI in mental health.

          Educational Goals

This presentation will equip participants to think deeply and consider the impacts of AI as an administrative tool, as an emotional support for clients, and as a broader shift for the relational bedrock of society.

          Training Schedule and Attendance Requirements

Please note, this is a 3-CE training, comprised of three hours of training plus time for RECAMFT announcements during the meeting and a short break. You must be logged on at the beginning of the training, be present during the event (including responding to attendance checks by coming on camera, verbally replying, and/or replying in the chat), and stay logged on for the full duration, to end at 12:55pm, in order to earn the CEs. If your camera is off the entire time, and RECAMFT cannot verify you were physically present at your computer throughout the training, then RECAMFT cannot issue a CE certificate, as we would not be able to show that the BBS requirements for your participation were met.

          Recording

RECAMFT intends to record this event, and assuming no technical hurdles, will be producing it as an on-demand course to be published at the RECAMFT CE Center, including the ability to earn CEs. RECAMFT members will have access there for free. Non-members and reciprocal chapter members will be able to purchase access. Access to the recording is not included with any registration for this "live" (real-time on Zoom) training. If you know that you will not be able to attend on the event date listed above, please do not register for this training and instead wait until the on-demand version is published. Registrations are managed separately and cannot be transferred.

RECAMFT members, please register for the May 19 CARE Circle here. Remember to enter the email address associated with your RECAMFT account to sign in and register for this members-only meeting.

Please note, this membership event does not qualify for CEs.

For 2026, until we find someone to help, Pat can only facilitate four meetings while she is in the RECAMFT President role.  Those meetings are scheduled for 90 minutes but will be shortened to 60 minutes if we have 4 or fewer participants.

Besides this one, one more CARE Circle meeting is planned for 2026:

We hope new facilitators will want to offer the group at different days/times to allow for more access for members. Please reach out to Pat at president@recamft.org or email RECAMFT at info@recamft.org if you are interested in facilitating.

RECAMFT members, please register for the September 14 CARE Circle here. Remember to enter the email address associated with your RECAMFT account to sign in and register for this members-only meeting.

Please note, this membership event does not qualify for CEs.
