This introductory-level workshop examines how racial inequalities are manifested in the criminal justice system. Utilizing Ava Duvernay’s documentary "13th", participants consider the impact of incarceration on individuals, families, and larger communities. In the workshop, participants practice mindfulness and somatic strategies for managing the discomfort that can emerge during discussions of the criminal justice system. Participants also identify their feelings and biases related to various aspects of race, violence, and social justice. The workshop concludes with a consideration of how to integrate an antiracist clinical approach towards the criminal justice system into one’s clinical practice.
