9:00 am - 12:15 pm
Zoom, 3.0 CEs
Available only as this "live" (on Zoom) training. Will not be recorded, no on-demand option. Please plan to join us on December 6th if you would like to learn from Dr. Tsao.
Course Description
It is estimated that up to 3 million adults in the United States alone are currently suffering with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – a number which is nearly equal to the population of Los Angeles. Despite this notable prevalence, there is continued stigma, misunderstanding, and inaccurate diagnoses about this highly treatable disorder, both in the public eye as well as within the field of mental health. These inaccuracies prolong the suffering of those with OCD, both by delaying an accurate diagnosis, then again delaying access to effective treatment, both of which can take years. Furthermore, these mistakes often lead well-intentioned but underinformed therapists to be ineffective for their clients suffering with OCD and can often fuel therapist frustration and burnout.
This training aims to help providers learn how to recognize OCD by learning about the diagnosis, and common clinical presentations. Concrete ways to distinguish OCD from other psychiatric disorders frequently mistaken for OCD will also be reviewed. Finally, attendees will learn about the most evidence-based treatments for OCD, namely medication and a specific form of CBT known as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Hands-on and practical case examples and interactive exercises will be used to help illustrate concepts and demonstrate what high-quality ERP can look like “in-the-room.”
Educational Goals
Attendees will learn about the DSM-5 diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, including common subtypes, typical clinical presentations, and appropriate differential diagnosis.
Attendees will develop a practical working knowledge of the most evidence-based treatments for OCD, namely medication and Exposure and Response Prevention, to more effectively direct patients with OCD to one of these two treatments.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Describe the features of the DSM-5 diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), including obsessions and compulsions
- Explain the insight specifiers for OCD, and its impact on treatment selection
- Recognize common clinical presentations of OCD including contamination fears, excessive doubting, and intrusive, unwanted, sexual or violent thoughts
- Name at least one way to distinguish OCD from GAD, PTSD, eating disorders, and body-focused repetitive behaviors
- Discuss recommended medication dosing to target OCD, in contrast to depression
- Explain the overall rationale for Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, including the role of both repeated, gradual, deliberate exposure and associated strict prevention of anxiety-reducing compulsions.
- Give at least one example of a potential exposure with associated ritual prevention for a fictional case of OCD.
